1. I have never heard before of " run of the mill" having the sense of imperfections . Maybe I am learning something. I always knew it as meaning - nothing special, nothing out of the ordinary.

2. Gandalf : I have never read J.R.R. Tolkien's " Lord of the Rings " but it is in my sub-conscious as it was read to me when I was very young. Probably because I went to junior school in his house ! After that I went to the same grammar school as he did ( but not at the same time ! ) . johnB.

Tx a lot for your help John. I didn't know the meaning of  " run of the mill"  and I searched the internet for its meaning and origin. I saw that the term has been in use since the early 20th century with the meaning "not outstanding in quality or rarity," "average, ordinary." and therefore imperfect. 

But before it was an adjective, run-of-the-mill was a noun referring to manufactured goods not graded or sorted for quality

Am I right ? As to Grandalf I am pleased to know that it was read to you when you were very young because you went to junior school in his house and to the same grammar school as he did (of course not the same time) how amazing !
