Neanderthal was discovered by Rudolf Virchow in 1856 who saw him like a beast.
Cro-Magnon was discovered by Louis Lartet in 1868.
Less than a century ago, Marcellin Boulle was still describing Neanderthal like a stupid lout, quite an animal.

Slow and thorough studies led to nowadays conception: there's a bit of Neanderthal inside each of us. Yes Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon interbred with each other!
