Irlande, 1952 : Philomena Lee, adolescente tombée enceinte, est envoyée au couvent de Roscrea et son nouveau-né lui il est arraché des mains pour être « adopté » par des Américains. Elle va essayer de le retrouver, puis rencontre Martin Sixsmith, un journaliste qui vient d’être licencié. Ils partent pour l'Amérique sur les traces du fils de Philomena.

Philomena est une vieille dame un peu naïve qui a gardé un sentiment de culpabilité de son passé de fille-mère, sentiment tellement enraciné en elle qu’elle agace à force d’humilité et de résignation. Elle ne juge pas, elle veut juste savoir ce qu’est devenu son fils.
Martin est un journaliste désabusé et opportuniste qui veut profiter de cette histoire, faire éclater la vérité sur les agissements des religieuses du Couvent des Roscrea et en même temps se refaire une popularité. Film émouvant mais jamais mélodramatique.
Judi Dench qui a joué dans  plusieurs «James Bond » et dernièrement dans « Indian Palace » mériterait bien un Oscar pour ce rôle.

Très beau film. L'histoire est très intéressante avec un très bonne rythme. Les deux acteurs ont une très jolie relation. Allez-y, avant que le film part.

Moi aussi, j'ai bien aimé ce film qui laisse entrevoir l'évolution de notre société... Nous sommes loin des débats actuels sur les problèmes de notre société d'aujourd'hui et c'est intéressant de voir qu'il faut parfois lutter contre les tabous et les esprits étroits pour tenter de voir clair et se rendre compte de ce qui est vraiment humain et donc acceptable.

Comme j'avais préparé mon petit compte-rendu en anglais avant de lire vos commentaires, je vous le soumets ci-dessous, il viendra en complément de ce que vous avez écrit :

« Philomena » won the prize of the best scenario at the ‘Mostra di Venezia’ last September.

It has been inspired by a true story : that of an Irish girl of 19 years old : Philomena Lee, who gave birth to a boy after a short affair and was sent by her parents to a convent to expiate her sin, namely to work with a few fellow-girls in the same condition as her, doing some housework for the nuns, in exchange of earning their living and that of their children.

They are allowed one hour a day to see their child, but this only until the nuns have found a rich and worthy family to adopt the child. And of course this happens too quickly, between the child’s 2nd and 5th birthday. And then the girl can return to a “normal” life, as everything has been wiped out, forgotten, and last but not least, kept secret and therefore unknown to the world.

At the beginning of the film, we see a journalist in want of a good and high-paid job, who seems rejected by ex-colleagues of the BBC. Then we see Philomena, a retired nurse, all by herself, gazing at a photograph. Her daughter enters the room and catches her looking at the photo. She doesn’t know that boy of about 5.
Today is his birthday, he is fifty.
These 3 people are most important for the making of the film, as the association of the three of them will trigger off the start of the procedures.
Hence the moving story and the eager desire of both women to find out about Philomena’s son and the daughter’s half-brother. And the journalist’s quest in every direction to help them, although he finds the whole thing rather “has been” and of little interest.

This is an excellent film, which reveals the true feelings of the Catholic Irish of that period (1952, not so remote though !). One is abashed of the behaviour of the nuns covering up the secret until the end, whatever the purpose of the request.

I will not reveal the end of the story, and let you enjoy it if you have the opportunity to go and see it.

The Magdalene Sisters is a 2002 film, written and directed by Peter Mullan, about four teenage girls who were sent to Magdalene Asylums (also known as 'Magdalene Laundries'), homes for women who were labelled as "fallen" by their families or society.

I think it is frightening when people impose their narrow moral view point on Young people,thinking  they have the right attitude and also that they are God's representative.
